Arthur Ashe Stadium, the world’s largest tennis venue, has seen numerous rain delays since it opened in 1997. When the United States Tennis Association decided to put an end to those delays with a retractable roof, they called Morgan Kinetic Structures to make it happen — using domestic steel products and Siemens technology.
Today, the stadium’s million-pound roof can open and close on demand in six minutes — with no impact to the 23,000 fans inside.
While the solution may look simple to the average tennis fan, the engineering behind it is anything but.
