Get to Know Matt McCoury: Electrical Designer
Matt McCoury has had a passion for learning how things really work since he was a kid. Now, he plays an integral part of our Morgan Automation team as an electrical designer.
Matt’s story is the fourth in our Meeting Morgan series. If you haven’t already, learn more about what it means to be a site services technician, senior design engineer, and large assembly supervisor at Morgan Engineering.
Q: What education or technical training did you complete to begin your career?
A: My high school had an Electrical Vocational program that I participated in. From there, I went to Stark State and received an associate’s degree in electrical engineering.
Q: How did you get your start in this career? What was your first job title in pursuit of this current position? What appealed to you about this field?
A: After high school, I started an Electrical Apprenticeship in the steel industry. Shortly after I graduated from the apprenticeship, I moved into the engineering group as an Electrical Analyst. Automation is an amazing field; I have had an interest in it since a 4th-grade science experiment on making a circuit.

Q: What drew you to this specific position? How long have you been in your current role? Have you held other job titles at Morgan?
A: The large scope of projects here at Morgan Engineering was a big draw. I have been an Electrical Designer for 4 years now.
Q: Can you describe what a day in this job includes for you?
A: Each day as an electrical designer is different for me. I may be designing the control system for the next crane, working with other designers on schematics before our panels get built, or researching a new device that would add value and functionality to our product. Some days are spent testing the product before it gets shipped to the customer site, while other days are spent in the field commissioning at the customer’s site.

Q: Was there anything or anyone that had an impact on your career choice?
A: My father had a big impact on my career choice. He encouraged me to follow my passion in the electrical field. I disassembled a lot of things around the house when I was young just to see how they worked. He worked with me to develop the tools that would make me who I am.
Q: What are your main goals for your work this year?
A: I’m working on streamlining some of our crane automation processes. I am trying to get some of the products we use “pre-assembled” to reduce commissioning time while capturing cost savings.
Q: What’s your favorite aspect of your job?
A: Seeing the finished product working as expected. Seeing months of work come together and every detail that was obsessed over become a reality.
Q: If a recent college graduate was interested in pursuing a job like yours, what advice would you give them?
A: Follow your curiosities. If something interests you, pursue it. Don’t concern yourself with how others might perceive it. Do not be afraid to try something new.
