Get to Know Cavan Ferguson: Safety Coordinator

In this edition of our ‘Meeting Morgan’ series, we introduce Cavan Ferguson, who has made safety-first his identity in and out of his role as Safety Coordinator at Morgan Engineering. Whether he is rock climbing or observing Morgan employees’ work, he always has an eye for crane safety and workplace protection.

A: I completed a bachelor’s degree in emergency management and homeland security, an internship at my county’s public safety department, and several OSHA certifications along with EMT training at Akron/Cleveland Hospital.

A: My first job title was Safety Compliance Specialist at a trucking company, where I focused on gaining firsthand experience with OSHA and DOT protocols and regulations. This role helped me build the foundation I needed for my current career path. I’ve always had a strong desire to help people, and this field gave me a direct way to do that. My parents always told me that choosing a career focused on helping others would lead to fulfillment, and that advice has always stayed with me. It’s rewarding to be in a position where I can make a positive impact on others.

A: I was drawn to this position because it aligns perfectly with both my background and my passion for safety. With my family’s experience in emergency services, I’ve always been motivated to make a direct impact in helping others. This role stood out to me because it provides an opportunity to apply my skills in a meaningful way, and I’m excited about the chance to contribute to a team that values safety and proactive problem-solving.

A: Every day starts with driving around our facilities and checking for potential hazards. Right now, it means any ice or snow that could pose threats. Afterward, I check our cabinets and restock any PPE. On Mondays, I hold safety meetings for our Site Services teams to refresh the group on safety guidelines. Each day can be different depending on the needs of our team.

A: My family had a significant influence on my career choice. My father was a Fire Lieutenant, and my mother is a dispatcher. Growing up, I was always learning about safety and emergency procedures. A pivotal moment for me came during my first semester of college at a football game. I witnessed someone nearby having a heart attack, and despite the large crowd in the bleachers, no one knew how to help. That experience solidified my desire to pursue a career in the safety field, where I could not only help others learn how to stay safe but also empower them to protect those around them.

A: My main goals for this year are focused on the Safety Grant, ISNetworld account, and employee training programs. I’d like to secure a safety grant so the shop can receive a forklift to help manage busy times. As our company continues to grow, we’re working on getting another ISNetworld account to support our expanding divisions. With this growth, it’s also important to revise and improve our training programs to ensure employees stay engaged and avoid complacency. Our workers are incredible, and we want to make sure we’re providing the resources that keep them focused on safety and continually refreshing their skills.

A: My favorite part of my job is the focus on safety and helping others. Growing up, I was always taught the importance of being prepared in an emergency, and now I get to put that into action. I love knowing that I’m making a difference by educating people on safety and helping them be ready to protect themselves and others.

A: If you’re interested in a career in safety, start by getting the right education and certifications, like a degree in safety or health and certifications such as CPR, First Aid, and OSHA trainings. There are many places you can take hands-on training and a lot of certificates can be learned online. Understanding safety regulations like OSHA and DOT is key to keeping workplaces safe. Stay updated on safety changes and continue learning by networking with others in the field. Lastly, if you genuinely care about protecting others and creating safe environments, this field is a great fit. It’s a rewarding job where you can make a real difference in people’s lives by keeping them safe at work!
